Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an FDA-approved, non-invasive liquid that pediatric dentists paint onto teeth to instantly stop decay, kill bacteria, and prevent further damage. It is a pain-free, no-drill alternative to traditional fillings, often used for young children, anxious patients, or to treat extensive cavities quickly. SDF is not a complete replacement for fillings but can pause decay until more definitive treatment is possible
Mechanism: SDF works by simultaneously remineralizing the tooth structure and killing bacteria that cause decay
Benefits: It eliminates the need for shots and drilling, reducing anxiety
Usage: Often used for very young children, those with special needs, or to manage decay in "baby" teeth.
Limitation: The biggest downside is that it causes permanent staining (blackening) of the decayed part of the tooth, though it does not stain healthy enamel
